2018 Rice-Spivak Vineyard Pinot Noir
Rice-Spivak is from a six-acre vineyard south of the town of Sebastopol. We love it for its exotic aromatic profile and sensuous character.
+ The cool 2018 vintage allowed for extra-long hang time at this cool site with harvest dates on September 23 and October 2, at least 2-3 weeks later than usual.
+ The soils in this vineyard are Goldridge sandy loam along with volcanic ash. Goldridge is very common for the area but the volcanic ash is quite unusual.
+ It also is situated just outside the northern edge of the Petaluma Wine Gap, which provides a daily refrigerating dose of cool air.
+ The vineyard produces small clusters with tiny berries of extremely intense, aromatic fruit which certainly shows through in the glass.
+ This wine was fermented in small open-top fermenters and was 85% de-stemmed with 15% whole cluster fermentation selected for the final blend.
+ We get aromatics of cassis and sage and then a mélange of darker berry flavors on the palate. Although the feel is sumptuous it is extremely elegant.
