2017 Vonarburg Vineyard Riesling
Vonarburg Vineyard is located in the cool deep-end of Anderson Valley, just next to the sparkling wine producer Roederer Estate. Here we get to see what type of Riesling is possible when planted in the best sites in Anderson Valley and cared for with the utmost love and skill. We believe that this wine is on par with some of the finest dry Riesling made anywhere in world. It is distinctive of its place.
Vonarburg literally means “from the town of Ar” and was the maiden name of the grower Norman Kobler’s mother. Norman’s parents, Hans and Thersia, were Swiss immigrants in the 1960’s who founded Lazy Creek Winery, the second oldest winery in Anderson Valley. Norman grew up around vines and planted many of the vineyards in the Valley. He is a well-known, and extremely well respected, figure in the farming community there. Today Norman and his family take care of this small 2.5 acre block with zeal and focus as it truly represents something of their heritage.
The 2017 vintage was an abnormally hot year all over Northern California. In Healdsburg, for example, we had a Labor Day weekend with sustained temperatures over 110 degrees. This type of heat was not uncommon. While it certainly moved things along quickly for a time, it also conversely had the effect of almost making the plants give up. When cooler temperatures arrived in September the vines seemed unable to resume ripening in a normal fashion. We often went between weeks without the chemistry of the grapes changing much at all.
2017 also brought us extremely low yields. We were only able to make 125 cases of this wine.
Despite the conditions, we think the 2017 Vonarburg Riesling is a beautiful testament to the supreme quality of the vineyard characteristics shining through. Lush aromas of ripe apple, ginger and lime proceed the moderately rich flavors of pear and nectarine. It has great depth. The flavors are balanced out on a lively spine of well integrated citrus-tinged acidity.
