2016 Vonarburg Vineyard Riesling
Vonarburg Vineyard is located in the cool deep end of Anderson Valley, just next to the sparkling wine producer, Roederer Estate. We feel lucky that this primo hillside was planted to Riesling, as it would be ideally suited for excellent Pinot Noir, which would likely be more profitable.
The upside is that you get to see what type of Riesling is possible when planted in the best sites in Anderson Valley and cared for with the utmost love and skill. We believe this wine is on par with some of the finest dry Riesling made anywhere in world. It is distinctive of its place.
Vonarburg literally means “from the town of Ar” and was the maiden name of the grower Norman Kobler’s mother. Norman’s parents, Hans and Thersia, were Swiss immigrants in the 1960’s who founded Lazy Creek Winery, the second oldest winery in Anderson Valley. Norman grew up around vines and planted many of the vineyards in the Valley. He is a well-known and extremely well respected figure in the local farming community.
Today Norman and his family take care of this small 2.5 acre block with zeal and focus as it truly represents something of their heritage. It is practically in the front yard of his mother’s house.
The 2016 Vonarburg Riesling has beautiful aromas of apple, pear, and petrichor. In the mouth it is a noble and reserved character at the moment, showing flashes of brilliant lemon zest, lime, wet stones, and very early harvest apples. It finishes with a snappy and laser-focused line that trails deep into the horizon.
This wine will age extremely well. Well-stored bottles will certainly be interesting—and perhaps improving—in a decade or more.
