2016 Santa Cruz Mountains Pinot Noir
Our Santa Cruz Mountains Pinot is sourced from a single vineyard off of Skyline Blvd high above Los Gatos. Sitting at almost 2300 feet elevation, this is certainly one of the highest Pinot Noir vineyards in California. The altitude and proximity to the ocean combine to produce a nice blend of steady warmth and also cooling effects, producing a distinctive Pinot.
The ground here has a shallow topsoil and then a rocky base comprised of shale, sandstone and limestone. These rocky and sandy soils are fairly devigorating and tend to yield grapes with certain intensity. Although due to climate and long growing season they can remain elegant—their vibrations are unique.
We source a variety of clones here including Mt Eden, Pommard, and 115. All harvested on the same day, each brings a different element to the wine.
The aromatic signature of this wine calls to mind birch bark and mandarin oranges combined with a little red berry, of course. The palate has a nice combination of juiciness and pleasantly tart berries. The citrus zest note again makes an appearance through the middle and end of the taste, finishing on a refreshing note.
In 2016 we decided to completely de-stem the fruit. As with all of our Pinot, this was fermented at relatively cool temperatures in small stainless steel vessels with mostly punchdowns. It fermented in 22 days to dryness.
