2015 Mountain Terraces Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon
Above the town of the town of Glen Ellen, to the east, lies the Moon Mountain AVA. Here Mountain Terraces Vineyards sits high above the valley floor at 1600 feet, perched above legendary vineyards such as Monte Rosso and Hanzell. The soils contain both rhyolite and basalt outcroppings. The rugged, steep, and thin top soils of this hillside terrain help to create wines with a certain vitality and a ruggedly handsome edge.
At Reeve, we make a small amount of Bordeaux varieties, with inspiration from the classic California Cabernets of the 1970s. We bring our same nuanced approach to the winemaking as we do to our Pinots. Obviously we make Cabernet differently, but our sensibilities certainly come into play. We hope you see the common thread between all of our wines, regardless of variety.
With our Mountain Terraces Cabernet, the “mountain” part is apparent at first sniff. You’ll notice high-toned berries intermixed with sauvage aromas of wild brush and herbs. In the mouth, wild blackberry, dark cherries, tobacco and sage. Secondary notes of cassis and fresh mushroom also make an appearance. This wine also possesses a taut structural element.
The wine was fermented and had extended maceration for 51 days. It was aged in a variety of French Oak, 33% of which was new, for 26 months.
