2015 Anderson Valley Pinot Noir

2015 Anderson Valley Pinot Noir

The 2015 Reeve Anderson Valley Pinot Noir is a testament to the cool nuanced flavors of the “Deep End” of the valley, near Philo. It was sourced primarily from two vineyards—Broken Leg and a historic Anderson Valley vineyard that just changed hands and is awaiting its new name.

Broken Leg is a steep hillside parcel located high above Philo in the mountains.  It is unfathomably steep in certain areas and one has no doubt as to how it got its foreboding name.  The man that planted the vines in the late 70s actually did break his leg there. These mountain vines struggle for their existence up there. The fruit shows intriguing notes of hibiscus, sassafras, and high-toned cranberry fruit.

The latter vineyard, while in the chilly deep end, sits just off of CA HWY 128 and slopes down towards the Navarro River. There we source a variety of blocks and clonal selections. The wine from these blocks provides the ballast for the more ephemeral components in the wine.

All of the lots in this wine were fermented in unique and tiny 1-2 ton fermenters giving us a fine palette of blending components.  We had long cool ferments that lasted up to 31 days with hand-punchdowns 1-2 times per day. The wine was aged in a mix of French Oak coopers with 20% new, 15% once used, 25% twice used, and the remainder neutral.
